Voice coil motors VCMsalternatively known as non-commutated DC linear actuators, are a type of direct drive linear motor. This simple electromechanical linear motor is used in space constrained applications such as pumps, precision positioning and mobile camera lens actuation. The motion of a VCM is determined by the applied current as well as the mechanical parameters of mass, spring constant, and damping coefficient.

Technically, the VCM motion and mechanical parameters can be determined by a position sensor, but such a sensor may be too bulky for a miniaturized solution. To overcome this limitation, measurements of the VCM electrical impedance versus frequency can be combined with an electromechanical model to identify mechanical parameters. Knowledge of the mechanical parameters in VCM systems enables health monitoring and accurate control that can enhance overall performance of devices containing VCMs.

At present, a miniaturized electronics system that monitors the electrical impedance and identifies mechanical parameters of a VCM has not yet been presented in literature. To address this, Dr. Lucas Koerner and Dr. Thomas Secord at the University of St. Thomas proposed a solution using the AD, i.

To be precise, the two scholars detailed an analytical model that could relate the electrical impedance to mechanical parameters and demonstrated a miniaturized electrical impedance analyzer for VCMs designed around the AD integrated circuit.

Their work is currently published in the research journal, Sensors and Actuators A.

In their approach, they surrounded the AD with support electronics to create an instrument that measures impedances of 5 ohms at frequencies approximately10 Hz and used this instrument to measure VCM impedance versus frequency.

They also used an analytical model that related mechanical parameters to the electrical impedance so as to identify VCM mechanical parameters from a non-linear least-squares fit to electrical impedance measurements. Altogether, they demonstrated the instrument and the mechanical model through two experiments. The authors reported that their modified electrical system could measure impendences of a typical VCM coil of 10 ohms with a signal-to-noise ratio of In addition, repeated measurements of a single VCM configuration demonstrated that the natural frequency, knowledge of which is critical for optimal efficiency, was detected with a variation of 0.

Although a departure from harmonic motion was observed at low velocities, they showed an enhanced model that still accurately describes these conditions. In summary, a repeatable and miniaturized instrumentation system for measuring the impedance of VCMs operating in frequency ranges typical of actuation applications was developed.

Thomas Secord demonstrated reliable calibration based on known resistance values and prescribed high pass filter characteristics. Given the simplicity of their model identification algorithm, straightforward implementation of their system is anticipated as an online diagnostic tool for VCM health monitoring and control system adaptation.

Even though our resistance is so very important to us, the resistance we use as vapers is on quite a small scale compared to other applications. When you rebuild, use mech mods or even advanced devices, its important to know about battery safety, and one of the most important things you will learn, is that allowing your batteries to run too low, or charge too high, can be much more dangerous than you think.

As your batteries run lower, their voltage output also drops. Normally a freshly charged or any battery from the 18xxx range, will read at about 4. Some can go lower than others, so you need to be careful here. I will recharge when they get that low. All Rights Reserved. Australian Vaping Awards Results! In such cases, the inductance would not be stamped on the side but instead may need to be found empirically.

The best way to measure inductance for an inductor like a coil solenoid is to use an inductance bridge or meter. If you have neither, a more indirect way is to use an oscilloscope. Turn on the oscilloscope and clamp the two clips of one voltmeter to the circuit on opposite sides of the coil to determine the voltage drop across the coil.

Then do the same for the resistor with another voltmeter. Set the frequency of the oscilloscope such that the voltage drop across the resistor and inductor are the same. Finding said frequency may be a matter of trial and error. At that frequency, the resistance of the resistor and the impedance of the inductor will be equal. The resistance of the resistor has not changed from the start; it is independent of the frequency. Paul Dohrman's academic background is in physics and economics. There is also the resistive part of the coil which could affect results. Yes, I know that Z depends on f, L and the resistance R of the coil. But you could measure Z by the method I described above and then find L let's say from the measured values of f and R. But nobody seems to do it like that.

Of course that only works if you care about Z in a frequency range that your DMM can deal with, and you don't care about DMM resistance or lead inductance.June 10, References. Learn more Inductance is the ability of a coil to stop an electrical current from flowing through it.

An inductor coil can stop one current so a different one is able to flow. TVs and radios, for instance, use inductance to receive and tune into different channels. Inductance is usually measured in units called millihenrys or microhenrys. It is commonly measured by using a frequency generator and an oscilloscope or an LCM multimeter.

It can also be calculated through a voltage-current slope measuring the change in the electrical current passing through the coil. Then you can set up the current monitors and begin your measure. You'll need to read the peak current in amperes and the amount of time between voltage pulses in microseconds. To calculate the inductance, multiply the voltage delivered in each pulse by the length of each pulse, and divide that product by the peak To learn about how to measure inductance with resistor and capacitor, continue reading below!

Measuring Impedance of a Coil. Thread starter Pitt Start date Jan 13, Status Not open for further replies. Pitt Senior Member. I am trying to measure the resistance of a coil with a digital meter. I know that with an AC coil there will be a resistive componenet and a reactive component, and together these make up the total impedance of the coil. It is this total impedance that determines current. I know that you cannot measure reactance with a meter, and when you measure a coil with a meter, you are only reading the resistive portion of the coil with may be very low and only a fraction of the total impedance of the coil.

But what if the wattage rating is given for the coil? Should you then be able to see this resistance component with a meter?

All of this ignoring the fact that resistance changes with temperature. If this were a DC coil then would this be a direct measurment since there is no reactance? From what I remember, you can place a variable resistor in series with the coil, and adjust it until you read one half of the supply voltage across the coil.

Then, disconnect the circuit and measure the resistance of the variable resistor without disturbing its setting. Its resistance equals the coil's impedance. Marc L Member. Pitt said:.

Marc L said:. The resistive portion of the impedance of the coil cannot be figured from the wattage specification of that coil. Different coil constructions are available, some of which have higher temperature specs than others.
